I love the second day of a new school year.
The first day jitters are mostly gone, and you know pretty much everyone in the class. It’s usually a completely different experience than day one.
 
We started the day by hanging the collaborative mural we created yesterday. It looks great on the wall and helps give students ownership of the classroom. We completed a second art project today, creating stylized self-portraits like the two you see at the top of this post by Ali and Matt.
 
I introduced the students to one of the major projects we’ll be working on the first half of this school year: The Election Collaborative Project. We’ll be working with 5th grade classes from about a dozen schools in Oregon, California, Kansas, New York, and Pennsylvania. Students in each class work in news reporting teams to research and present reports on various aspects of the electoral process. Teams can create podcasts, videos, or websites.

I assigned an introductory project today: The MEgazine. Students were given a project description today. Please let me know if you have any questions. MEgazines will be due next Tuesday.
