As part of our collaborative poetry unit with the South Paris Collaborative we worked as a whole class to create a new version of an existing song. After much brainstorming and exercising of the democratic process, we finally selected our source material. We also decided to use some of the things we’ve studied this year as the topic of the revised song.

Students rewrote the lyrics to Queen’s classic song We Will Rock You, giving it an American Revolution theme. The video in this post was recorded just before we joined the South Paris Collaborative in a live Skype poetry performance session.

WE THE PEOPLE:
Lyrics written and performed by DreamExtreme 5th Graders
Inspired by Queen’s We Will Rock You

VERSE 1 – THE BRITISH
Colonists, you’re lazy
And a little crazy
Thinkin’ you deserve the same rights as us

You make us angry
Dumpin’ our tea
Believin’ some day you’re gonna be free

We will, we will tax you…
We will, we will tax you…

VERSE 2 – THE COLONISTS
Georgie, youre a mean king
Taxing ever-y-thing
We dont wanna be ruled by you

Were tired of this mess
Shoutin with our last breath
Give us liberty or give us death!

We will, we will fight you
We will, we will fight you

VERSE 3 – THE NEW CITIZENS
Everybodys equal
A nation made of people
Declaring independence from the king

We have the right
To win this fight
Waving Old Glory all through the night

We the, we the people
We the, we the people
